FIELDNOTE / 03 / Showcase context

Read the brief before entering the spotlight.

Questions to ask before interpreting a showcase invitation or an actual competition announcement.

01

Identify the actual organiser

Find the responsible operator, the current announcement and a reliable route for questions. A repost or an attractive graphic may omit important context. This website does not currently publish an active competition calendar, judging panel, official entry rules or an entry service. The guide is a preparation resource rather than an invitation to enter.

02

Understand the activity

Clarify whether the activity is a demonstration, editorial feature, portfolio review, exhibition or competition. These formats have different purposes and may create different expectations. Do not assume that visibility means judging, that attendance creates eligibility or that a proposal has been accepted because someone has expressed interest in discussing it.

03

Read the current requirements

For an actual activity, locate the written eligibility, categories, deadlines, permitted assistance and required deliverables. Ask how questions and changes will be communicated. If fees or other commitments are involved, obtain current terms from the organiser before making a decision; a general professional conversation cannot confirm them.

04

Clarify authorship and disclosure

Explain who made the work, what support was involved and which material comes from other sources. Organised activities may have particular disclosure rules. Keep collaboration and image permissions visible, and do not describe a team result as your sole work or a study as an original commission.

05

Understand what happens to the material

Ask where images or text may appear, how credit is attached and which publication permissions are required. Find the route for corrections and questions before submitting material. Avoid sending private records or relying on a public social-media image as evidence that unrestricted reuse is permitted.

06

Describe outcomes accurately

Keep a real result attached to its organiser, title, category, date and supporting source. A photograph at an event is not an award, and an expression of interest is not entry acceptance. Do not turn an association conversation or a reading resource into a claim of official judging, recognition or endorsement.
